Valentine's Day is a perfect day to express your love, and to celebrate the spirit of love. I would like to share a bit history of it. There are several opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts.
There was often a social gathering or a ball.

In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800's and now the date is very commercialised. The town of Loveland, Colorado, does a large post office business around February 14. The spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.

The American Bobtail is a relatively new and uncommon breed of cat which has appeared since the late 1960's. It is most notable for its stubby "bobbed" tail about one-third to one-half the length of a normal cat's tail. This is the result of a cat body type genetic mutation affecting the tail development, similar to that of a Manx. The cat is not related to the Japanese Bobtail despite the similar name and physical type — the breeding programs are entirely unrelated and the gene causing the mutation is different because the gene causing the American Bobtail's tail is dominant, whereas the Japanese Bobtail tail gene is recessive.

Scientists at the Gyeongsang National University, South Korea, led by Prof. Kong Il-keun, modified the genes of Turkish Angora kittens so that a red protein would glow in their skin when exposed to ultraviolet light. Noooooo please !!

To clone the cats, the team taken skin cells of the mother cat and changed its genes to make them fluorescent by using a virus, which was transplanted into the ova. The ova were then implanted into the womb of the cat.

One kitten was stillborn, but the two glowing survivors now weigh between 3kg and 3.5kg, reports the Scotsman. What a wonderful news !

New York cats of all stripes braved the downpour yesterday to attend the first day of classes at a special school where their owners can learn to "think like a cat."

The Meow Mix "Acatemy" opened its doors at Union Square East and 15th St. for the event that includes scratching workshops from deejays and cat therapy sessions. The daily event will run from noon to 7 p.m. until Friday.

A seafood cooking demonstration by Iron Chef Cat Cora will also be a part of the daily fare.

"I have a lot more in common than just my first name with cats," Cora told the crowd. "I really want people to come experience our cat-centric curriculum."

Cora prepared a meal intended for human consumption, but focused on cat-friendly ingredients such as salmon and shrimp.

Tania Vivas, 19, a nursing student, brought her kitten, Kiko, from East Harlem in a pink carrying case. She said she hoped to gain "a better understanding of how he's feeling and thinking."

Cat psychologist Warren Eckstein, a syndicated radio show host, was on hand to advise cat owners struggling with their pets' emotional or behavioral issues.

"We have to get down to a cat's level and understand what he's thinking about, see things from his perspective," Eckstein said.

Mayor Bloomberg sent a statement in support of the event, saying, "Even the most seasoned cat owner must admit that it sometimes seems as if our feline friends are speaking a different language - which is why the understanding generated by the Meow Mix Acatemy is good news for two- and four-legged New Yorkers alike."

Christopher Santiago, 23, of the lower East Side, brought his 5-month-old yellow tabby, Garfield, who strutted in a rhinestone collar.

Although 10 minutes long, this is one of the best videos I've found on how to bathe a cat. The man doing the bathing has prepared the scene with all the supplies he needs. He uses a gently spray to wet down the cat and the double sink allows a second sink to be pre-filled with soapy water. He uses a gentle shampoo designed for cats, and has a thick towel folded on the counter next to the bathing sink. He has a second set of towels available on the other counter, waiting for the blow-drying. Jangles, the beautiful Himalayan cat, is about as cooperative as a cat can be during the entire process. This presents an excellent argument for accustoming a cat to being bathed at an early age.
